What do a curb-conqueror wheelchair, a memory-assist device for people with Alzheimer's, a self-installed automotive heads-up display, a tactile graphing calculator for the blind, a neural-directed wheelchair, and a continuous positive airway pressure alert all have in common? Each was invented by high school teams as part of the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams program.

Life changed in the blink of an eye. What's next? More than 10,000 people suffer some form of paralysis each year. How do you cope? This show is for them, their family and friends.

Discussion with Judy Clarke about life after an automobile accident that resulted in paralysis.
In July 2000, Judy Clarke donated blood at Morristown Hospital in New Jersy. She was in a hurry to get home, so she signed out. Walked to her car and entered I-287, bound for Mountain Lakes. Within a couple of minutes, she passed out. The car hit the center median, drifted to the right and rolled over. Without a seatbelt, she was tossed into the windshield, despite the airbag. She woke up the next day in the same hospital as a quadraplegic.

Two doctors share their experience using Tai Chi to help people maximize their health: Dr. Peter Wayne of Harvard University and Dr. Zibin Guo of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Studies overwhelmingly point to regular physical exercise as the crucial medicine for what ails Americans. Physicians have a hard time convincing even healthy patients to take action, but it’s a much harder sell for those with limited movement caused by physical disabilities. Dr. Guo adapted the ancient Chinese martial arts, for the use of people with mobility limitations. His method is in widespread use in China. Dr. Wayne explains how he uses Tai Chi to ease the symptoms of a number of medical conditions, especially among women.

"No, It Is NOT In My Head - the Journey of a Chronic Pain Survivor from Wheelchair to Marathon" is an account of how the author: Nicole Hemmenway, was injured at 17 years of age, that turned her world upside down with a diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), and how the pain would be so overpowering she found herself having to use a wheelchair or she would be so paralyzed by the pain she remained bed-ridden feeling hopeless and all alone. Then she found the drive and hope in the miracle that would take her out of that wheelchair and bed to being more independent. Nicole spent many hours suffering the effects of CRPS/RSD to not only overcome all that and become a marathon runner, but she had also found her life again and was eagerly wanting to live it to the fullest, which was a feeling she never thought she would ever have again. Cruise with Bruce radio host interviews Mike Kijak of Up & Away Ballooning about the Sonoma Wine Country, Kendall Jackson Winery and Balloon Rides for the disabled. Up & Away Ballooning becomes the first hot air balloon operator in the United States to offer authentic wheelchair-confined adventurers the opportunity to soar above the magnificent hills and vineyards of Northern California’s Sonoma County. The Pegasus Project’s specially-designed and crafted passenger basket, shipped directly from England, will make it possible for those persons who are dependent upon wheelchairs for mobility to literally float above the Wine Country. Up & Away Ballooning ordered the specially-designed basket from London. The easy access Lindstrand basket measures approximately 4 feet by 7 feet and can carry a wheelchair rider and up to three others. Without wheelchair, it can accommodate six people. Modeled originally after Lindstrand’s ‘Glass’ bottom basket system, its lowered rail makes it possible for the seated passenger to enjoy more than180-degree visibility. Mike and Patti Kijak, owners of Up & Away Ballooning made the decision to purchase the wheelchair-accessible basket in response to numerous inquiries from private individuals and travel agents with clients seeking to experience Northern California’s picturesque Wine Country from this breathtaking vantage point. “It’s a dream three years in the making,” Mike confides of their plan to create an equal access outdoor adventure for persons in wheelchairs. This past May 2011 a black man (Mr. Dwight Harris) in a wheelchair was brutally assaulted by two Washington DC Metro Police Officers. They picked him up and slammed him to the concrete which split his face open. This is yet another episode in a long line of police brutality incidents within the District of Columbia---and the nation in general. Police brutality in America continues to plague communities of color in an extremely disproportionate manner. It is undeniably a major aspect within America’s institutionally racist fabric. Please join us this episode as we discuss this recent incident as well as deconstruct police brutality in America on a broad level. Myriad activists, throughout the DC metro area, have already begun to organize around this reprehensible incident as a means to gain justice for Mr. Dwight Harris and to put an end to police brutality as a whole. If police brutality in America is not stopped it will continue to take the lives of countless men, women and children, most of which being black and brown skinned. Please tune in to this important episode that the corporate media ostensibly could not give a damn about covering accurately. Please click the link below to see the actual footage of the heinous crime committed by rogue police officers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gibEMtN-Dig&feature=related
